Band 7+: The developments in technology are making life too complex for humans, so everyone should accept simple life without technology. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that technology has made our lives unnecessarily complicated and entirely abandoning it represents an optimal solution to a simpler lifestyle. While technological devices have undoubtedly introduced new challenges, I contend that removing them can result in far-reaching repercussions than it actually solves.

At one end of the spectrum, advocates of the former perspective can argue that electronic equipment has progressively blurred the boundary between personal and professional life. Particularly, instant messages, phone calls and electronic mails from communication platforms have made extremely difficult for individuals to disconnect for fear of missing information, losing chances to spend time unwinding on their own. Many users also claim that curated online content posted on social media accidentally leads to insignificant anxiety, thereby worsening their mentality. From this perspective, rejecting technology ostensibly can tackle these problems. However, this idea largely overlooks the fact that these phenomena exist due to improper use rather than technology itself. Thus, instead of sacrificing all the benefits of modern devices by getting rid of them, people should find out effective methods to significantly address negative effects such as limiting screen time, digital detox, etc.

Although technology certainly poses new complexities, I am strongly convinced that with sensible usage, it can simplify multiple sophisticated processes in daily life, which used to require many steps now can be finished within such a short time. Consider something as applying for a job or subscribing for a university. Tasks took individuals days, weeks or months to wait but now can be effortlessly done in minutes or hours. The same principle extends to education. For example, students nowadays don’t have to shuttle from one location to another to search for studying materials because they only need a few clicks to acquire their desired information. Ironically, eliminating technology may resurrect many inconveniences that it was created to remove. Hence, if used sensibly, technological equipment can benefit its users remarkably.

In conclusion, irrespective of introducing certain difficulties into modern life, it can still be addressed by wise methods from users. Completely abandoning technology is ill-advised due to the ability to revive old inconveniences. The key is to learn to develop healthy habits in using digital platforms while embracing all the advantages, opportunities and efficiency that technology brings.
