The growing demand for trend-driven fashion has led to ongoing debates over its detrimental impacts on the environment and social aspects. In my opinion, the pressing issues come down to disposable waste and labor exploitation; therefore, authorities should impose stricter regulations and exert controls over consumption habits.
To begin with, the instant fashion industry usually prioritizes profit over environmental concerns. Mass production often replies heavily on disposable textiles which are discarded quickly, leading to massive textile waste. This approach would seize down production cost; however, it may pose a threat to the environment. As synthetic textiles used in mass production contain toxic dyes and chemicals which end up in rivers and oceans thereby harming aquatic life and ecosystems.
Regarding social impacts, as a matter of fact, fast fashion companies frequently outsource production to factories in developing countries, where workers endure poor conditions, meager wages, and widespread exploitation. As a result, child labor and vulnerable communities are often exploited to produce cheap goods. For instance, back in 2021, many people boycotted H&M due to reports of the brutal treatment of workers, including poor working conditions, extremely low wages, and labor exploitation in their supply chain.
To mitigate those issues, governments are of paramount importance to raising public awareness. In particular, they can enforce stricter laws on pollution and blue-collar workers’ welfare. Furthermore, people should promote ethical fashion brands that utilize environmentally friendly materials and provide fair labor practices. For instance, recently a brand called MUJI has gained a good reputation for focusing on minimalism and embracing long-lasting values.
In conclusion, it is controversial that the rapid development of the disposable fashion industry negatively leads to mass pollution and unethicality. However, I contend that those could be rectified by more rigid production regulations and the honor of sustainable fashion.
