The bar graph compares the proportion of boys and girls who participated in nine types of sports in New Zealand in 2002.
Overall, soccer played by boys and netball played by girls were the most popular games. Whereas, very few players played cricket and netball by ladies and gents respectively.
Among boys, the most popular game was soccer, which accounted for 25%. The percentage of swimming sport was half of that of soccer. In addition, tennis and basketball, and martial arts and cricket had the same proportion, being 8% and 11% respectively. While, netball and athletics were the least played sports with a percentage of 1% and 3% respectively. Lastly, other games accounted for 18%.
On the other hand, in terms of girls, the most popular sports were netball with 26%, and cricket with 23%. Cricket was not popular among girls with its percentage was equaling the percentage of netball played by boys. Martial arts, with 2%, was the second least played game. Moreover, there were marginal differences among other types of sports played. For example, 4% for athletics, 8% for basketball, 8% for tennis, 5% for soccer, and 10% for other kinds of games.
