In recent years the growth of manufacturing goods for consumers has had a detrimental effect on the environment. This essay will discuss the possible reasons and suggest solutions to this issue.
Nowadays more and more people are likely to become the “victims” of consumerism, which stimulates people to buy excessive amounts of goods, clothes, and devices. For instance, the most notable example of this is the culture of fast fashion, modern buyers prefer following fashion trends to having one long-lasting item. Moreover, these days the economy is based on this ongoing trend encouraging individuals to buy more by paying cheaper prices. As a result, the clothing waste would end up being in landfill sites, contaminating grounds and water supply.
The other root cause of this is poor waste recycling. Even if the citizens sort out the garbage, there are some cases when the garbage is not transported to the proper site and continue decomposing there. Not only people but also flora and fauna suffer from the consequences of it. If the water is polluted the sea creatures could die out. As well as the garbage, there are plenty of hazardous liquids, thrown into the rivers, which might pollute the water and habitats of many species.
Regarding the possible solution of these problems, I am convinced there are some measures that can be taken by governments and individuals themselves. First of all, the government has to build recycling plants to recycle the waste and impose fines for the companies rejecting it. Another step is to promote sustainability among local communities and encourage citizens to use eco-friendly products and give up on single use items, like bags or clothes. Implementing at least a few regulations is going to be the critical step towards the solution of the problem.
In conclusion, while the growth of consumer production takes a toll on the environment, caused by culture of consumerism and poor recycling, there are still some approaches to change it. The first most significant approach is to provide some regulations like establishing recycling plans and imposing taxes. The other one is creating eco-friendly campaigns encouraging people to have less waste.
