It is argued by some people that thepopularity of online work is destroying the sense of community in neighborhoods, whereas others believe it actually gives people more time to acquire community ties with their surroundings. I strongly agree with the latter statement because I think online work allows people to be more involved in the residential community and support businesses as they spend more time in their local area.
On the one hand, some people claim that online work destroys the sense of community in the residential area by isolating employees in their homes. That is to say, without going to workplaces and socializing at work, individuals may start to spend most of their hours at home and become socially isolated. This leads to a loss of community life in neighborhoods. For example, a remote employee who previously would have walked through shops and greeted neighbors may now become more disconnected from their local area and rely more on delivery services for groceries and online orders.
On the other hand, others believe that it gives people more time to acquire community ties by being more involved in their residential community and supporting businesses. This gives an opportunity for individuals to explore the local area and acquaint themselves with neighbors and buy lunch from nearby cafes or shop at local stores during breaks, which they might have put off for a long time. For instance, someone who works from home can have the flexibility to participate in local neighbourhood meetings and community clean-ups or simply chat with neighbors at local cafes.
In conclusion, despite the fact that online working can lead to isolation and loss of community life, in my view, the advantages outweigh the drawbacks because it gives people more opportunities to build local relationships and support nearby businesses.
