In today’s society, many believe it is compulsory that the international community take immediate action to ensure all nations around the glob reduce the use of fossil fuels. I belive while immediate action is necessary due to climate change, health risks and air pollution, it also might be challenging to cut-off the usage of fossil feuls in short time because of economic dependence and lack of affordable and sacable alternatives.
First and foremost reason to take immediate action is the pressing issue of climate change and environmental destraction. Fossil fuel combustion release greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which accelarate global warming, causing rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss. For instance, the Paris Agreement (2015) aims to limit global temperature rise; however, emissions remain high due to fossil fuel dependence. Another vital reason is health risks and air pollution. To illustrate this point, burning coal, oil, and gass leads to air pollution, increasing respratory diseases, lung cancer, and cariovascular issues. A WHO study found that air pollution causes over seven million premature deatths annually, with fossil fuel emissions as a primary culprit.
However, there are still some challenges for immediate reduction, such as econimc dependency on fossil fuels. Many countries relay on fossil fuels for economic growth and employment, making an urgent transition difficult. As an example, countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia are heavily dependant on oil exports, and sudden reduction could cause economic recessions. Additionally, lack of affordable and scalable alternatives is another crucial challenge. While renewable energy, such as solar, wind, and hydro is growing, it is still expensive and lacks infrastructure in many developing nations. For example, African nations struggle to invest in renewable energy due to financial constaints, despite having solar potential.
In conclution, whle it is necessary for governments and international communities to make sure reduce the fossil fuel usage, it also can be challenging due to economic dependence and lack of infrustructure in some countries. In my opinion, a gradual transition would be the key to solve this problem.
