And anyone can take advantage of this easily to propagate their agendas and ideologies for their personal gain, that would have been impossible previously. For instance, false news can be spread about a celebrity involving in derogatory practices, however, before going through a proper judicial process, he or she may be shunned by large groups online, who intend to defame such a person.
Furthermore, online social media platforms set the perfect stage for elaborate scams for people to fall into. This is because people don’t verify the genuineness of the information, especially if the advertisements of these scams have believable quality. For example, there are many gadgets that advertise themselves as a first-class product with unique features. People, especially those who are technologically proficient, tend to invest a ridiculous amount of time and money in them, however, get scammed with a product that doesn’t work at all.
One solution to this problem is to set guidelines for consumers of online media. Governing authorities can set up regulation and restrictions on what information can be published online and generate awareness among the society of importance of such practices. Proper system could be set up to monitor the flow of information online, to capture people who take part in spreading misinformation. Additionally, campaigns could be conducted to educate people, especially the youth, and teach them to filter the plethora of information they encounter as fake or genuine.
To conclude, although vast amount of information is already available in the web, it cannot always be reliable to take actions on all such information. Precautions must be taken to ensure that only genuine news are spread. Media literacy is one of the cornerstones of a healthy and matured society.
