Band 8+: The majority of news being reported is bad news such as war, famines, accidents and crime. What do you think that is? Do you think news should be balance of both good and bad news?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Media plays an important role in spreading awareness about all types of news; however, most of the news reported by media is negative news like wars, famines, accidents, and crime, but, in my opinion, media houses should cover both kinds of news – good and bad . This essay will discuss the importance of balanced news, and the logical reasons will be shared further in the essay.

As far as media houses are concerned, they cover news which spreads fear among the people, because they have a belief called “fear sells easily.” If they show such news, then their viewership increases, and ultimately the TRP of their channel goes up. Furthermore, it is a psychological fact that viewers are more interested in watching negative news. Apart from that, sometimes news has a political and social agenda; it is used for creating pressure on the government. In current times, for instance, news media is focusing on pollution in Delhi to create pressure on the government to address the issue.

In contrast, media houses should cover positive news to inspire and motivate people. Other than that, many people are showing interest in sports such as cricket, so they show more sports achievements in cricket. Not only does positive news help to inspire people, but it also promotes unity in society. Recently, for instance, a blood donation camp was organized in Surat, and it was covered by the media to focus on people with different religions who came together to donate blood.

To conclude, both types of news – positive and negative – are important as both have different purposes to serve. Positive news helps to motivate and reduce stress, and negative news is important to address social issues and get better engagement from the viewers.

In some countries, students pay their college or university fees, while in some others, the government pays for them. Do you think the advantages that the government pays the money outweigh the disadvantages?

In contemporary society, university tuition fees are covered by some governments, while in others, students have to bear the cost themselves.
