Nowadays, prison is the most common solution to criminal behaviour, but many individuals believe that education is a better method. I disagree with this opinion, but I believe that education is an essential part of the prison system.
The most significant reason why I believe that prison is necessary is that dangerous criminals are kept away from society. It would be a major threat to people if murderers, rapists and terrorists were simply given educational courses and taught why their crimes are wrong. Prison can also deter people from committing crimes because they are afraid of being imprisoned. If the punishment were just an educational course, some people might decide to commit crimes anyway. As a result, replacing prison with education could lead to an increase in crime.
However, education is an important part of the prison system. There are a large number of countries where prison is simply a place where criminals are separated from society. If there is no education system in prison, being there can negatively affect criminals, so they may leave prison as worse people than they were before. Education should be included in the prison system, as it is in many European countries. For instance, Scandinavian prisons provide education for lawbreakers, so many of them become different people after leaving prison.
In conclusion, I believe that prison is necessary, but education should also be provided because it can help change criminal behaviour and reduce reoffending.
