Nowadays, many individuals are struggling with obesity. This happens because of the availability of junk foods and can easily be eliminated by imposing high tariffs on these products.
To begin with, with the introduction of fast food in the middle 20th century, people started to consume junk foods daily; because it is fast, tasty, and sometimes even cheaper than a homemade meal. Especially in the countries like the US people are more likely to consume it since they have high purchasing power and longer working time. According to Yale University, 67% of the American population consumes at least one meal of fast food daily; we should also mention that this country has the highest level of obesity with 39% of the population being overweight.
However, this can be solved by taking some measures like taxation. These products are being overused because they are usually cheaper than healthier options; by imposing high taxes on these products, we can not only reduce their consumption but also support healthy food manufacturers. For example, in 2015 British parliament decided to increase the taxes imposed on liquor by 90%; in the following years, there was 120% decrease on the sales of these products. The same method can be applied to prevent obesity and support farmers with the money acquired from the food taxes.
In conclusion, because of the low prices of unhealthy foods, many people are struggling with obesity; however, by imposing high taxes on junk foods we can reduce the consumption and increase the healthy food production by supporting the farmers.
