One school of thought holds that the conventional ideas about behavior considered appropriate do not help them adjust to modern life. While the benefits of traditional beliefs are irrefutable, I would agree that it is not relevant in the era of modernization.
It is understandable why many experiences are still applicable in contemporary society. The foremost rationale for this idea probably is that these ideas are the things that have been experienced and contemplated by our ancestors so that this can be used and applied without doubt. For example, nowadays, although there are many modern technologies that we can use to curb diseases, the general public still believe in traditional remedies. Moreover, the ideas about morality are also the things that never go out of style. Not only the past but also nowadays, compassion, perseverance, and hard-work are the key to success. Without these things, a person regardless of economic status, gender or age can not reach a favorable result.
Despite the aforementioned benefits, when we no longer live in narrow spaces and poor conditions, the old generation’s thoughts become obsolete and inapplicable which widen the generation gap. For instance, many youngsters are rejecting the obligation of marriage, opting for celibacy or cohabitation for additional freedom. Another idea previously deemed taboo that the youth are starting to embrace is body modifications, namely tattoos, and body piercings. For past generations, these activities were often associated with criminality, and opposed to today where they are seen as a means of self-expression. So in modern society, if the old generations foster younger people to act like stereotypes, it will make the situation become bleak and of course somehow put their descendants under a lot of depression and stress.
In conclusion, although there still are beliefs that are valuable that the youth must respect and obligate, some of these no longer apply. Young people should be conscious to choose which one is suitable to their own and to the recent society.
