In today’s modern world, personal data is stored on computers of several companies and organizations. Personally, while acknowledging some drawbacks of this activity, I believe that they pale in comparison with the benefits it offers.
On the one hand, some may argue that companies’ digital storage of personal information may pose certain threats concerning cybercrimes and privacy problems for citizens. Regarding the former, users-particularly the elderly-may be vulnerable to cyber threats arising from the storage of personal data in online databases. Due to limited digital literacy, they are more likely to fall victim to identity theft or financial fraud when their personal information is accessed or misused following data breaches, leading to financial hardship as well as emotional distress. In terms of privacy issues, as personal data is stored on digital computers’ databases, which are not immune to cyberattacks or hacking, people may face serious information leakages. For example, public figures may face intense public backlash or even be forced to resign their positions when their sensitive data is leaked or misinterpreted, even in the absence of any actual misconduct.
On the other hand, I would contend that holding personal information on computers can benefit both individuals and society. First, digital storage allows citizens to gain easier access to their information, saving both time and effort. Modern computers are equipped with large capacity, which empowers them to save huge amounts of information. Were individuals’ data to be stored digitally, people could breeze through what would otherwise be time-consuming processes such as airport check-ins or loan confirmations. On a societal stance, online data storage can enable authorities to prevent probable threats to their citizens, improving country security. To explain, once personal data is stored in governmental organizations’ computers, governments can not only prevent terrorist groups or harmful communities but also identify the culprits behind such activities.
In conclusion, there are valid reasons regarding cybercrimes and privacy problems for some to believe that online storage of personal data on computers of companies or organizations can be detrimental. However, considered at a deeper level, the advantages of doing so bring to both society and individuals far outweigh the mentioned drawbacks.
