Band 7+: The population of some countries is growing rapidly. What are the effects on some people? What can be done to maintain the quality of life for people living here?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In modern society, the rapid growth of population in many big cities leads to detrimental effects on citizens living in these cities, namely poverty and environmental degradation. Fortunately, investment in overcrowded areas and environmental protection methods can be applied to lower or even eliminate these issues to increase the quality of lives.

In terms of the issues, population growth can contribute to the increase of poverty risk as well as environmental contamination. Specifically, overcrowding can lead to a higher demand for jobs, thus numerous people cannot find employment, so they suffer from poverty. As a result, a number of slums are created, and this leads to another problem, which is environmental pollution. Some slums have very few toilets or sewage systems, thereby wastewater may flow into nearby rivers or streets, contaminating the environment. To illustrate, many cities in India are home to millions of people, thus the government cannot meet the demand for jobs. Therefore, the shortage of jobs contributes to the significant rate of poverty in these countries and numerous ghettos. Consequently, the poor waste management systems in these areas lead to environmental degradation in the cities.

With regard to the solutions, investment in overcrowded areas and the enhancement of environmental protection can somewhat mitigate the issues. Specifically, in order to solve the poverty issues, governments should attract private investment and support local businesses to create more job opportunities, reducing unemployment and poverty. Additionally, if people want to have a better life, they will have to eliminate the environmental problem. Therefore, people should invest in efficient waste collection systems and place more public bins in low-income areas to prevent rubbish from accumulating. For example, Vietnam has invested significantly in solar and wind power systems in provinces such as Ninh Thuận and Bình Thuận. These systems have created thousands of jobs for local residents while reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.

In conclusion, although rapid population growth places considerable pressure on urban areas by increasing poverty and environmental pollution, government investment in job creation and environmental protection can significantly solve these challenges and improve residents’ quality of life.
