Many big cities across the country experience traffic jams, which lower the quality of life. It certainly would be detrimental to workers who need efficient mobility. In this essay, I will discuss the main causes and possible preventive solutions for these issues in the following paragraphs.
There are numerous activities in metropolitan cities demanding high transportation access and resulting in congestion, especially during periods of office hours. This gridlock occurs particularly at arterial intersections connecting to main roads. Even the implementation of one-way government policies, which mitigate the crowds from opposite vehicle lines, has not solved arterial jams. Jakarta, for instance, has the greatest road infrastructure in Indonesia; however, it is not able to accommodate the motorbikes and cars overflowing across the road sections during peak hours. As a result, it endures delays of up to 40 minutes to reach the office. Apart from government regulation, society’s awareness plays a role in mitigating the worsening congestion.
Citizens can contribute to lower the bottleneck by reducing the number of self-driving throughout rush hour. Most urban experts and policymakers agree that the traffic severity is triggered by people who drive their own vehicles instead of using public transportation. They prioritize their convenience through private vehicles without considering the affect. Therefore, shifting from private to public transport might reduce the volume of vehicles on the roads. According to the International Transport Journal, Tokyo, Japan, became the second city with the lowest congestion around the world during peak hours. People tend to use buses and trains to commute, which are available everywhere. They are much more affordable compared to buying fuel for their own vehicles.
To conclude, the simultaneous use of roads for various activities during high-traffic periods decreases the social quality of life by contributing to severe traffic and causing inefficient mobility. Reducing vehicle volume by not using private vehicles during peak hours could mitigate crowded road intersections often used by the public.
