Band 6+: The traditional sense of community is fragmenting as more people interact online rather than with actual people in their local environments. What are the reasons for this, and what are the effects?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, it is widely believed that there is a significant gap between individuals in online and real life. This essay will elaborate on both the main reasons behind the problems and subsequently propose the possible impact.

As technological advancement is enhancing all over the world, it has affected how people live and work every day. This is as the provision of cutting-edge technology, such as the Internet and social media offers a wide range of opportunities for every person to seek specific information or just surf on its screen. Furthermore, globalization plays an important role in why people tend to avoid socializing in their neighborhoods. This can occur because they desire to have a diverse connection with those across the world who possess a good reputation or high education that is associated with their jobs or background knowledge. For instance, some adults in Asian countries opt to use Instagram to figure out information about volunteering, conferences, and competitions rather than asking their colleagues in reality on the grounds that it provides rapid and meticulous data.

On the other hand, although this issue has positive repercussions in a broader network with a wider community and access to information, it can bring about dreadful points in relationships and well-being. This means that when individuals are restricted from others and just focus on online platforms, they can have weakened local ties with local communities, leading to a decrease in local social cohesion and support networks. As a result, when people feel high pressure and they require help, others cannot assist them, so they can suffer from severe diseases. To illustrate, when some teenagers in Indonesia tend to have bad relationships with their close friends in actual life, they often get depression and anxiety, and even end up suicide. Hence, people should be aware of their environment and engage in traditional community although they have a busy schedule.

In conclusion, people are attracted to be more active online than in real life because of technological advancement and globalization. However, these can generate negative repercussions on relationships and lead to mental health issues.
