Nowadays, the use of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, is taking the place of face-to-face contact for many people in daily life. The disadvantages, from my point of view, outweigh the advantages.
On the one hand, there are many advantages of online chatting. With social media, for example, people can send texts to each other in seconds. They, as a result, do not need to travel long distance to see or communicate with someone, especially at rush hours. In this case, social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, is a convinient way, as it is fast and does not require that much physical energy. Another advantage worth mentioning is that in places, such as the theatre or the library, people can send text messages without disturbing people nearby.
On the other hand, there are several disadvantages to this trend. Because social media enables people to communicate within seconds, many no longer engage in physical activities, which can damage their health. Nowadays, for example, people do not need to go outside to meet their friends and have fun with them. Instead, they just sit and send them memes online. As a result, many people are struggling with obesity. Young people are, moreover, spending most of their time at home, at a time when their bodies need more physical activities. Since social platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, allow them to text or talk, even see each other more easily than meeting face-to-face, they can harm their overall health.
In conclusion, although social media can offer several advantages to people, such as talking and texting each other online more easily, its disadvantages outweigh them.
