Opinions are divided on whether children should be permitted to pick activities that they enjoy doing in their leisure time. Despite a drawback, such as non-benefit activities, I think that letting them be more autonomous better nurtures their inborn talents.
Granted, one may argue that by choosing recreational activities for children by parents, this could help them fully develop. This is predicated on the assumption that adolescents, who are still very impressionable, cannot distinguish right from wrong in the hobbies they are pursuing. To be specific, there are some activities that are not good for children; for example, addiction to frivolous activities like gaming or TV is unavoidable, which affects both their well-being and their performance at school. In this situation, parents play an important role in deciding which interests their sons or daughters should focus on based on their experience without worrying about whether their descendants like them or not. However, this measure is more likely to cause conflicts and controversies between parents and children, which may affect family bonds.
The freedom to select pastimes, on the other hand, enables children to develop their unique talents. Consider that a child who has an interest in physical activities like football or swimming is free to go for these pursuits, which would facilitate the development of their ability. In contrast, if their parents force them to do some activities they do not enjoy, like reading and playing music, they may not achieve their full potential, and vice versa. However, this practice can have some disadvantages, but with some instructions from their father or mother, adolescents are more likely to accept advice from someone who can speak from experience. They might, as a result, adjust their hobbies by allocating time to the activities that benefit them in the long run.
In conclusion, although parents can make more informed selections, children should be free to follow their own interests. With some advice from their parents, I think they could do some healthy activities in their spare time.
