There is an ongoing debate that some people contend that developed countries do not have any responsibility to help developing countries. However, there is a more compelling argument that others argue sustainable aid is necessary because of global inequality and globalization.
On the one hand, several people claim that helping developing countries is not necessary because each country needs to care about domestic issues first. Although richer countries have financial stability, they still have their own problems. For example, the United States, which is considered one of the strongest and wealthiest countries in the world, still struggles with drug problems. Therefore, even if the U.S.A. has extra money to support others, it is better to spend that money on solving its own problems. Secondly, misuse of aid has happened frequently around the world. To be specific, North Korea has received aid several times from South Korea; however, the lives of North Korean citizens do not seem to be better than before.
While that argument is valid, I support the idea that a certain amount of aid is necessary. First of all, long ago, richer countries were able to develop by dominating poorer countries. While ruling colonies, they stole not only natural resources but also human resources. For instance, the UK became one of the strongest countries by establishing companies in India. They gained large areas of land to build factories and used free labor, known as slaves. Therefore, I believe richer countries need to provide a certain level of aid to fix the faults of the past. In addition, in the past, several countries developed their economies while polluting the environment. However, other countries can no longer do this because of growing awareness of environmental issues. As a result, richer countries need to help rural areas protect nature. Specifically, as all countries have become globalized, we need to help each other.
However, this does not mean that developed countries should cover all the problems of developing countries. It is important to provide sustainable aid such as basic education and healthcare systems so that poorer countries can stand on their own. Moreover, conditional aid can help prevent the misuse of assistance.
In conclusion, while some people insist that poorer countries need to develop by themselves, it is undeniable that countries all over the world need to help each other.
