Band 8+: These days many parents pressure their children to be successful. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowaday, there are many children who are put under a lot of pressure from their parents. This case is mainly caused by increasing competition in society and parents’ desire for a better future for their children. From my perspective, I think that this is a negative development, which can harm children’s mental health and comprehensive development.

There are several reasons why parents pressure their children to be successful.Firstly, this case comes from increasing competition in education and employment. Many parents now believe that academic success is essential for future career prospects. Meanwhile, many well-paid jobs require excellent qualifications and skills. Therefore, students must achieve high grades to gain entry to top universities, prompting parents to push them harder. Additionally, some parents see children’s achievements as a reflection of their own success. At the same time, social expectations may encourage parents to demand high performance.

Despite parents’ good intentions, putting excessive pressure on children is generally a negative development due to its detrimental impact on their well-being and overall growth. At first, parents’ pressure may cause stress, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, children may become afraid of failure and lose their confidence. For example, many children now experience severe stress before important examinations due to parental expectations. Furthermore, this can also reduce children’s motivation and long-term satisfaction. A child forced to study despite having a passion for art may struggle to find happiness and fulfillment. They may pursue careers chosen by their parents rather than their own interests.

In conclusion, parental pressure is mainly driven by intense competition and the desire to secure a successful future for children. However, I believe this is generally a negative trend because it can damage young people’s mental well-being and prevent them from developing according to their own talents and interests.
