The number of individuals choosing cosmetic surgery to improve their outward appearance is increasing dramatically. Some people believe that this tendency will bring advantageous factors, whereas others believe that it may bring about the disappearance of authentic beauty values, thereby deserving to be banned. From my perspective, I partly agree with both statements because a total ban on cosmetic surgery is too extreme, while the abuse of cosmetic surgery can result in the homogenization of beauty, and the negative effects on people’s well-being.
On the one hand, having cosmetic surgery can bring beneficial impacts on people’s appearance and confidence, especially for those not very attractive, or those with physical imperfections. For example, when being examined and operated by professional doctors, they can enhance their looks significantly, boosting their confidence and attractiveness to others. Consequently, they can avoid the possibility of being criticized, or mocked, which can wound their feelings. Furthermore, the development of cosmetic industry will also be increased substantially when a large number of individuals undergo cosmetic procedures, supporting the development of society thanks to economic prosperity. Therefore, imposing a prohibition on this practice is not completely necessary.
On the other hand, the abuse of cosmetic operation gives rise to detrimental health conditions. For example, when people overuse cosmetic surgery extremely, their bodies will be affected significantly by the higher risk of serious bleeding, and be vulnerable to external and internal side effects. As a result, their bodies can suffer from permanent complications, affecting people’s overall well-being. Besides, the outward appearance will be homogenized by similar beauty standards from the cosmetic industry. For instance, when people pursue the same standard of beauty, they will have resemble beauty, contributing to the homogenization, the erosion of true beauty values, and the loss of identity in a community or a nation as well.
To wrap it up, although turning to cosmetic surgery can enhance people’s overall appearance and bring the satisfaction, the overuse of this practice leads to disadvantageous impacts on the health conditions of those desiring to alter their appearance into their better versions. In addition, true beauty will disappear and be homogenized when pursuing resemble standards of beauty. Therefore, cosmetic procedures should only be performed if absolutely necessary, and ought not to be abused excessively to prevent patients from negative consequences.
