With the development of international study exchange programs, increasingly more youngsters have been opting to study overseas in recent times. While I believe this practice is likely to yield personal and academic benefits, its drawbacks associated with financial and mental straits should not be overlooked.
There are various advantages to studying in a foreign country. For a start, overseas students can boost their independence, confidence, and self-reliance, because they shoulder the whole responsibility for every important task, from performing household chores to paying bills. When living abroad, foreign students also get exposed to diverse cultures, customs, as well as traditions. This, in turn, may help to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of cultural and traditional values. Moreover, overseas experience is a great opportunity for students to hone their real-life skills of communication and negotiation as they are supposed to be in contact with people from different national and religious backgrounds. Thus, this approach might allow young minds to develop as skillful and rounded human beings.
Nevertheless, this type of experience is not without disadvantages. From a financial perspective, not only do university fees drive up the expenses, but airplane tickets, study materials, travel costs, rent, money spent on food and transport, and miscellaneous expenses should also be taken into account. As a result, if students fail to get a part-time job, they may incur serious financial problems, thereby experiencing feelings of anxiety and even depression. This kind of stress might get even worse with the danger of becoming homesick and lonely. In such circumstances, the longer youngsters stay abroad, the more problems they are expected to encounter.
In summary, I, on the whole, believe that studying in other countries can enable students to enhance their variety of skills and grow into well-rounded personalities, even though several fiscal and mental repercussions are likely to be caused by this migration.
