Over the last years, the number of students who prefer to travel or work after graduating high school has increased significantly. Although there are several advantages of travelling abroad or getting a job, it can have some disadvantages as well. In this case I will try to discuss both positive and negative sides of this and draw a conclusion.
One of the main advantages of taking time off before university is that students can gain valuable experience that enhances their academic journey. For example, a student considering a career in healthcare might work in a hospital or clinic, gaining valuable insight into the profession. Similarly, travelling can help students explore diverse cultures and lifestyles, fostering critical thinking skills. These experiences play a significant role to build their career. Another advantage of working before university is the opportunity to save money, which crucial given the increasing costs of higher education. Tuition fees, accommodation, and other expenses can place a significant financial burden on students and their families. By earning money during a gap year, they can reduce this pressure.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to taking a gap year. One issue is that students might lose their study habits after being away from academics for a year. This can make it harder for them to adapt to university life. Also, starting university later than their peers could delay their graduation and career, which may make them feel behind.
In conclusion, while there are some risks involved in delaying university, the financial and practical of working or travelling make it a valuable choice. These experiences not only support their next stage of education but also help them grow as individuals.
