In the digital age, the growing number of individuals are sharing their personal details such as address, telephone and plastic card numbers online for various daily activities including banking, shopping, and socializing. Although this trend offers some certain benefits, I believe it poses significantly more potential risks and should be considered a negative development.
Admittedly, providing personal information online can bring some notable advantages. One of them is the convenience in daily transactions. People can perform banking operations, make purchases, or pay bills without physically visiting branches or stores, which thus saves considerable commuting time and effort. This is particularly beneficial for elderly or disabled individuals who may face mobility challenges. Moreover, sharing personal details allows companies to offer personalized services by analysing user preferences and behaviour patterns. To illustrate, streaming platforms such as Netflix can provide customized movie recommendations, while e-commerce websites can suggest products that match individual tastes.
However, I am convinced that these advantages are far outweighed by the severe disadvantages. One major concern is that privacy invasion and data misuse are becoming increasingly prevalent. Numerous companies collect excessive personal information and sell it to third parties without users’ explicit consent, therefore turning individuals into targets for unwanted marketing campaigns or even political manipulation. Additionally, once private details are uploaded online, people almost lose complete control over their digital footprint. This is exemplified by digital data which becomes permanent and often impossible to delete or modify; as a consequence, this can negatively affect future career prospects or personal relationships when sensitive information resurfaces.
In conclusion, while sharing personal information usually offers certain conveniences and personalized experiences, I argue the risks of privacy breaches and loss of data control make this a predominantly negative development.
