Band 6+: Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.To what extant do you agree or disagree?

Advertisement has been one of the strongest marketing strategies. We could see this from the high sales of popular products. Modern society tends to buy something they are attracted to rather than what they need. This could explain how advertising has such a huge impact towards a product.

In my opinion, advertisements do affect how people see certain products and have the ability to change someone’s perspective. For example, in Indonesia there is a company called ” aqua” which sells bottled water. There are also other bottled water companies in Indonesia such as ” Le Minerale” or “Club”. But because of how Aqua has been advertised for many years, people tend to buy Aqua more than the other bottled water brands. It shows that advertising could make people buy a more popular brand even though it is a little bit expensive.

In the current era, the emergence of social media and online shopping platforms make it easier for companies or brands to advertise their product. Usually, it leads to many people buying certain items not because they need it but because it attracts them. It happened to me once a while back I was scrolling through my TikTok for you page when I saw an advertisement for a shirt that was really nice. At that moment, I wasn’t looking for a new shirt. But because of how nice the advertisement and the product is, I bought it anyway.

Overall, the high sales of popular products can be seen as a result of good advertising. Despite it distracting people from buying what they need, it shows how powerful advertising is and how it could distract you from the original intention.

In today’s world, the high sales of popular consumer goods are often attributed to aggressive advertising rather than genuine societal needs. While advertising undeniably shapes consumer preferences, I believe that it does not completely override actual needs. Currently, the substantial sales of common consumer items do not stem from the population’s necessity, instead, they are driven by marketing influences. Most products nowadays are sold based on their popularity and marketability, as opposed to the true needs of the consumers, which reflects the immense strangle-hold of advertising. While populations that prefer healthy products are more cautious and do not follow advertising trends, I agree with the notion that advertising plays a significant role in determining […]

In the cutting-edge digital age, product advertisements are becoming more and more commonplace in vast media. However, the question of whether the influence of commercials on the quantity of goods consumed outweighs the customers’ actual need to purchase them remains a controversial topic. From my perspective, I partly subscribe to this statement. To begin with, […]
