In the modern era, emails have become the popular form for communicating messages to people across the globe. This has left some individuals upset at the idea of handwritten letters becoming a thing of the past. While most applaud the introduction of emails, others claim they lack the sincerity handwritten letters hold and are sad this practice is slowly disappearing from existence. I agree with this sentiment and will discuss reasons for sharing this opinion in the essay.
It is undeniable emails offer convenience and is free to use, whereas, written letters are not so much. Emails generally imply the sender didn’t think too much about the receiver and are presented more so as cordial courtesy in exchanges of emails, especially to family members or friends across the world. However, handwritten letters contain a sense of love and warmth, the very act of writing each sentence insinuates ruminating about the receiver. Moreover, it also exhibits the sender cares enough for the recipient to spend time and money; handwriting the message and paying postage to get the letter sent to the addressee. For instance, on Valentine’s Day, couples exchange heartfelt written letters as a gesture of their love for each other. This elucidates the fact that handwritten letters can be seen as a more thoughtful and more sincere form of communication in comparison to emails.
Furthermore, handwritten letters are generally kept as they are personal in impression but emails are a stark contrast to this. Emails are often felt as impersonal, they are more so associated with formality and are often concise in content. This results in emails generally getting put in junk or possibly archived. However, this is not the case for handwritten letters, as mentioned before, they are stored and kept, sometimes through generations. To illustrate this point, consider the number of letters, that have been collected from friends, past lovers, and family. These letters are usually kept and read to reminisce past events or feelings as they are emotionally touching to the recipient.
To conclude, I believe handwritten letters are far more effective in conveying genuineness than emails do. The general act of writing letters tells that they were thinking about the receiver, the time spent on writing shows they care about them and the money spent shows they cherish the individual.
