With the ongoing development of science and technology, food production has been revolutionized significantly with the advent of genetically modified foods which can be generated in a large quantity. Some believe that this new method should be extensively applied to meet the huge demand for food along with the present escalating population. I partially agree with this and contend that genetically modified foods may pose some threatening issues which should be considered meticulously.
It is undeniable that genetically modified foods can address the global issues associated with food shortages in many nations because of their tremendous advantages. Firstly, these new kinds of foods can be produced in large amounts due to genetic technology enhancing the high resistance toward pests and adverse environmental factors as well as their productivity. For instance, plants such as rice or animals such as pigs or cows are normally susceptible to diseases and unfamiliar weather patterns or invasion of pests or viruses, leading to low and inefficient yields. However, the genetic technology could make the plants and animals stronger and healthier. Furthermore, farmers have been facing woes related to climate change such as the rising temperature which profoundly influences the growth of animals and plants as food resources in the near future. Hence, the genetically modified technologies could engender new breeds that facilitate the food security of the world.
On the other hand, the worldwide governments should invest more money in the researches of genetically modified foods cautiously before employing these novel foods in a large scale. A pertinent question that should be clarified and answered carefully is whether the consumption of foods modified genetically could affect the genetic system of human. In addition, the replacement of traditional foods could push the natural genus on the verge of extinction which is an irreversible repercussion. Thus, the government should be encouraged to develop and flourish the traditional agricultural systems simultaneously such as adopting modern techniques in improving soil qualities or seeds and funding education programmes about the adaption to climate change for farmers.
In conclusion, while genetically modified foods can be a promising solution for the food shortage in the overpopulation, more studies and researches should be conducted to investigate deeply its effects on human beings’ health in the long run. Moreover, normal foods should not be neglected to guarantee the diverse development of foods and avoid the extinction of food resources.
