It is an irrefutable fact that exploiting protected places such as rain forests and desserts can curb the demand of global energy fuels. However it can also endanger the worlds ecosystem. In my opinion, while exploring undiscovered areas can be beneficial to secure energy supplies and strengthen the economic security, it is highly likely to threaten the biodiversity.
On the one hand, having access to the untapped resources can strengthen the global economy. As it can not only provide countries that are unable to afford enough oil and gas to its ever growing population but also offer job opportunities in the energy sector. For instance, in Bangladesh, some citizens are unable to afford such necessities due to the expensive pricing. Therefore, venturing into protected areas for oil and gas can facilitate to secure the world economy and have a steady energy supply for decades.
Conversely, If people were to explore protected areas for oil and gas, it would endanger natural habitats and the biodiversity. Forrest, wetland and grasslands fragmentation results in only isolating species but also limiting their access to natural resources, which will lead to loss of biodiversity. For example, oil drilling activities in rainforest have cause species such as orangutans and forest birds to lose their habitats due to deforestation. Clearly, opening to such areas will compromise the long-term biodiversity resilience.
In conclusion, even though gaining access to undiscovered areas has clear economic benefits, it can lead to irreversible consequences for ecosystems.
