Reflecting individual’s genetic makeup make the treatment more effective in long-term. Considering this, here comes the question if there should be individual health insurance. Reflecting all individual’s risk factors may affect the effectiveness of treatment. On one hand, it would be more applicable to all parties, as everyone would be benefited from this. The citizens by getting the treatment they needed, based on their health conditions. The government by defined the accurate working system.
On the other hand, the ethical implications of this system may be discussed. By determining this system, the privacy of patients becomes public, due to deepen information, which also may discover the personal information of family members. Talking about privacy, the classification also comes to a mind. Earlier, the traditional system was a “supporter” for people, who suffered from some illnesses. In this case, an insurance would be also classified into “low – risk” and “high – risk”, which may be considered as discrimination in some point.
Discussing all above, we may come to the conclusion that this system is less/more fair. The individual insurance system is fairer by comparison to traditional one, where patients didn’t choose their genes. Bypassing this system may lead to bigger economic and social problems in society and government. The idea of this system is also economically profitable. By increasing risk conditions, included in the insurance, government may also increase prices, which would cover the most part of costs during the treatment.
In conclusion, the idea of personalized insurance system may lead to better health system in government and fair evaluation of insurance costs. However, the ethical implications of this system may be challenged. By including some restrictions to the implication of this system, the ethical consideration would be more acceptable.
