Nowadays, there are more and more people who prefer to take a gap year to get a real-world experience or simply clarify their career goals. Most certainly, such a decision is followed by pros and cons, which will be discussed in this essay.
There are several benefits to having a year off. The most obvious one is the opportunity to get real-life working experience. It is highly popular among young adults to look for different volunteer programs as well as particular internships to gain knowledge about certain jobs. In addition, this approach might help future students to understand their academic and career goals since it is not theoretical lecture but authentic situation where the student has to overcome various challenges. Moreover, being this independent means that maturity and responsibility are being developed outside the classroom, which enhances students’ problem-solving skills.
On the other hand, some people find it challenging to find a job they want right after finishing school. It means that either a minority of employers are ready to hire young adults without any work experience or there is a lack of volunteer and internship programs for everyone interested. Another drawback is losing academic skills because potential students are more focused on gaining practical skills instead of cramming over the books which might make going to university much more difficult after a year off.
All things considered, even though there are some downsides of taking a gap year, such as job search and academic struggles, seeking for real jobs seems like a beneficial step for some students in terms of crucial practice and gaining experience.
