It is prevalent for people born in a foreign country to understand the cultural and historial development of the place they currently live in. I totally agree on this topic and will analyze the reasons behind with illustrations provided.
Firstly, it can avoid us to be impolite unintetionally. For example, in China, we cannot put our chopsticks in the middle of a bowl of rice, it means disrespectful to the elderly due to our chinese religious culture. One time, one of my Australian friends did it once in my family gathering, and my grandfather felt disrespectul on his behaviour. Hence, It is paramount to be respectful and polite towards the locals when living in a foreign country by knowing more the culture behind the place.
Secondly, it can bring impression to the local citizens you met and sometimes it builds up better relationship. To illustrate, an indonesian friend of mine, she can develop a deep convesation with me about the effect of world war I and world war II towards Hong Kong. She impressed me a lot as some of my local friends know nothing about this history, I am very appreciated she is willing to spend time on understanding my country’s history, therefore we become friends. Understanding more the country you lived in can enhance your own social relationship.
