Spending a lot of money on wedding parties and other celebrations has been a point of contention amongst people since a long time. Some believe it to be waste of resources while some argue that it is acceptable to spend a huge sum on events because of their deemed necessity.
People tend to view events like weddings as celebrated milestones in one’s life. They wish to have the wedding of their wedding of their dreams and throw a lavish fiesta where they can celebrate with their friends and family. People justify the extravagant celebration and massive expenses by the fact that these are special events and can be viewed as a symbol of their social status.
People who view these lavish celebrations as a waste use the huge expenses as their primary argument. I have heard about my own distant relatives taking loans from banks in order to organize opulent weddings. This leads to debt for couple to pay off for years to come.
While I do see the merits of both arguments, I just believe that spending more than your means is not wise and hence I gravitate towards keeping the celebratory events on the more modest side and only spending what you can afford. While a fancy party is enjoyable, these milestones are made special by their emotional significance and the people you celebrate them with.
In conclusion, the decision to spend a huge amount of money on an event is a personal one but people should also consider their current means as well as plan for the long term consequences of this decision.
