There exists a notable divergence in opinion regarding the impact of online communication, particularly through social media platforms. While some individuals celebrate this technological advancement as a significant enhancement to interpersonal connections, others argue that it engenders detrimental effects on society. In my view, despite the myriad benefits that the internet has conferred upon global communication, I am inclined to regard its influence as predominantly negative.

Proponents of social media assert that it provides unparalleled opportunities for connectivity, facilitating interactions regardless of geographical limitations. The ability to engage with others instantaneously is immensely beneficial, especially in collaborative environments. For instance, real-time discussions among team members working on a project can streamline problem-solving processes and foster immediate feedback. Furthermore, social media serves as a portal for staying informed about global events, granting users access to a treasure trove of information and news. Additionally, the assertion that online platforms offer a more accessible avenue for forming friendships is supported by the ease with which individuals can connect and cultivate relationships, often leading to deeper bonds than traditional face-to-face interactions might allow.

Conversely, the adverse repercussions of social media usage cannot be overlooked. Excessive engagement in virtual communication can impair one’s ability to converse in person, eroding fundamental social skills. For exemplification, a close acquaintance of mine, once exceptionally loquacious during our formative years, experienced a noticeable decline in his conversational abilities following the acquisition of a smartphone. This shift rendered him increasingly uncomfortable and hesitant in live interactions, particularly with unfamiliar individuals. Moreover, various studies underline the detrimental effects of prolonged screen time on cognitive functions, particularly memory retention. The emission of blue light from digital devices is also linked to visual impairments, contributing to a decrease in overall well-being.

In conclusion, while the advancements brought forth by the internet and social media are indeed noteworthy and have the potential to enhance communication, it is imperative to acknowledge the host of negative consequences that accompany their use. Striking a balance between harnessing the benefits of online communication and preserving essential interpersonal skills is crucial. By employing the internet judiciously and minimizing dependency on it, individuals can reap its advantages while mitigating its associated harms.
