Band 8+: You have been watching a documentary on genetically modified (GM) foods. These are foods in which genes have been changed to produce a desired characteristic. Some people believe that GM foods are the only way to feed the increasing world population. Others worry about the risks of growing and eating GM foods, such as risks to wildlife, the environment, or human health. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion. Write an essay in 200–250 words.

In contemporary society, technological advancements have led to numerous breakthroughs, one of which is the development of genetically modified (GM) foods. Advocates highlight the significant benefits, such as the enhancement of fruit size and the increase in crop yield, while critics express concerns regarding potential health risks, including allergic reactions, as well as detrimental impacts on the environment.

On one hand, the modification of genes in organisms presents unique advantages that can effectively address the challenges posed by an ever-growing global population. For instance, unchecked population growth intensifies pressure on food resources, leading to potential scarcity. This is where GM technologies have made a pivotal contribution by providing sustainable food sources that are not only larger but also more palatable compared to their unaltered counterparts. Moreover, genetically modified organisms are engineered to possess greater resistance to pathogens. A pertinent example can be seen in China, where GM crops have significantly boosted yields, thereby reducing the impact of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, on agricultural productivity.

Conversely, while genetically modified organisms exhibit increased resistance to certain diseases, there is a concurrent risk that pathogens may also adapt and become more virulent. This situation raises alarming concerns about the escalation of disease-carrying organisms affecting native wildlife and plants. When antibiotic-resistant bacteria, for instance, infiltrate food supplies, the implications can lead to a decline in both the quality and quantity of food available for consumption. Nonetheless, many of these adverse effects can be mitigated through the implementation of rigorous sanitation practices in farming and the use of advanced agricultural technologies to monitor and control pathogen entry.

In conclusion, genetically modified foods have demonstrated efficacy in addressing one of the most pressing global issues—unrelenting population growth. It is my belief that further research and experimentation in the field of genetic engineering are essential to ensure sustained benefits and to mitigate risks, thereby securing food availability for future generations.
