Avoiding the effects of media has become increasingly difficult in today’s technology-driven era. Mass media products such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops provide users with immediate access to a wealth of information from internet browsing and social media. This ease of access allows people to share and search for information more readily. In this essay, I will explore both the positive and negative effects of these media conditions.
On the positive side, this access to information can help individuals acquire new knowledge and broaden their perspectives. By consuming diverse content, people can stay informed about current global events, thereby enhancing their awareness. For instance, in April 2025, a devastating earthquake struck Istanbul, and news of this tragedy reached the world through media outlets like BBC and CNN.
However, despite these benefits, it is crucial for people to recognize the negative impacts of media as well. One significant downside is the decline in social interaction, which can affect human empathy and emotional connections. Many individuals may find themselves preferring social media to face-to-face interactions, leading to a distorted sense of connection. Moreover, this situation can contribute to the spread of misinformation, resulting in misunderstandings. For example, older adults are often more susceptible to believing information that is frequently shared by their friends on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. This information typically pertains to incidents or tutorials, which can sometimes be manipulated by individuals with ulterior motives.
