Many people believe that the best way to provide sufficient houses in large crowded cities is to contruct tall buildings. Although this statement have some merits and demerits too, I agree that building tall apartment blocks may accomodate large number of people in big cities.
Firstly, several people move to large cities due to numerous reasons such as availability of better employment, transport, medical and educational facilities. Consequently, major cities become very crowded and a lot of people face difficulties finding a home to live. It is often suggested that this problem can be solved by building tall residential blocks in major cities. Secondly, people don’t have to pay the rent of a whole house if they book an apartment in a tall building. This is because, apartments are generally more affordable than a separate home.
From my perspective, constructing tall appartment blocks may prove very useful in accomodating large number of people. Residential buildings should be constructed vertically rather than horizontally so that each building can contain numerous apartments. In this way, a small area can be covered by many families. For instance, a tall apartment block may equip dozens of families in the same area as a house accomodating only a single family.
In contrast, building tall buildings may have few disadvantages too. Not all apartments in a building get proper ventilation and sunlight which may lead to diseases in residents. Moreover, rooms which are at the top of tall buildings might become extremely hot in summers. Furthermore, people cannot fully enjoy the privacy as the same building will be shared by many other people as well despite having different apartments.
It can be concluded that problem of overcrowding in large ciities can be overcome by building tall residential blocks but this may result in loss of privacy and poor ventilation and sunlight in some apartments of the building. If we manage to provide similar facilities to other cities, the problem will not arise in the first place.
