Peer pressure, a relatively prevalent phenomenon among the young generation that is encouraged by many adults, is suggested to be rather detrimental. From my point of view, peer pressure has both positive and negative impact on the youngsters.
Admittedly, excessive peer pressure takes a heavy toll on one individual. Regarding mental consequences, firstly, it decreases self-confidence and self-worth, which are essential factors in self-development and achieving success, since the sufferers neglect their own opinions and act in accordance with the majority. Secondly, the presence and deterioration of depression can be attributed to peer pressure. People may push themselves too hard to adapt and, therefore, get overwhelmed but still refuse to take a break. At this point, depression occurs. Its most undesirable repercussion feasible is suicidal ideation and self-harm. Besides, this phenomenon urges one to follow the inclination, which is regularly a short-term target, and distract them from their main and long-term goals.
That said, peer pressure is beneficial in proper environments and circumstances. To be more specific, if the trend is well-intentioned, the pressured one will be motivated to adopt advantageous habits or traits. For instance, if the individual participates in a friend group where everyone has a healthy diet and exercises regularly, they possibly do the same. Furthermore, the gap between individuals’ competence in similar groups or generations can be mitigated significantly, contributing to the equal development and the increasing strength of the communities.
To recapitulate, peer pressure should be regulated and controlled strictly or, otherwise, it would be deleterious.
