It is argued that young people are given excessive freedom. From my point of view, I take issue with this perception.
Admittedly, children are given certain levels of autonomy. To begin with, regardless of social classes, they have the right to foster friendship with anyone that they can get along well with. This was rarely found in the past, especially amidst individuals who come from wealthy families on the grounds that they are restricted to forge strong bonds with those who bear background similarity. In addition to this, in terms of electronic devices, even kids, let alone teenagers, do possess their own phones or laptops, which is synonymous with not being strictly monitored by adults at home. As a result, they are allowed to utilise online platforms, namely Facebook, Zalo, Instagram, and the like with a view to expanding social networks as well as to have unlimited access to a sea of news and updates available on the Internet.
Nevertheless, numerous areas in the daily life of each child, contrasting with the aforementioned ones, are placed under the control of adults. Firstly, their phone use must comply with parental regulations, implying that both the types of games and the time spent on entertaining applications are closely supervised. This could be exemplified by kids under 12, who are permitted neither to download games containing violence nor to watch TikTok videos or surf Facebook before having adequately completed homework. In addition to this, regarding the academic environment, if students wish to make any formal requests such as attending extra classes, leaving schools before the end of the lesson, and so forth, they must be granted a seal of approval from teachers. Furthermore, not only are all of the behavioural errors noted in the school report cards, but progress in classes is also fully reported in the parent-teacher conferences occurring at the end of each semester so that supervisors can keep track of the study progress of their sons or daughters.
In conclusion, although the children’s independence is widely acknowledged, it is proven not to be excessive as they are still under adult control.
