Band 6+: Some people think that Nowadays children have too much freedom. Do you agree or disagree?

Given the prevalent concerns about the development of children, one thinks that they are having too much freedom. From my standpoint, I would challenge this school of thought for several reasons, which will be presented in the following essay.

On the one hand, too much autonomy and independence might be given to children by virtue of the lack of strict supervision from certain parents. This is especially true in poverty-stricken regions like Africa, where heavy financial burden is often put on citizens, and earning money to meet basic necessities has become a priority. Therefore, some parents may not manage sufficient time for caring and teaching their children, leading to an open environment, and in the worst-case scenario, they may develop negative behaviors that affect their future even if this is not due to parents’ intention. However, this line of reasoning is not sound, as children can go to school, where teachers have the responsibility to regulate them, so not having enough time to look after them is no longer a problem.

On the other hand, I believe not all children have enough freedom for a primary reason. In today’s society, most parents have a tendency to exert substantial pressure on their offspring to excel in every domain and to succeed, as they are cognizant of shrinking job market and escalating living costs. Hence, they may force their children to study on a consistent basis and pursue top rated schools, where high quality of education is provided, in order to gain profound insights and qualifications, leading to higher job opportunities. This could cause many young individuals have a sense of stress or even depression, which may be counterproductive for all of their unfulfilled aspirations. Although this guidance may begin from their wish for children to have a stable and prosperous life, this could lead to the hindrance of crucial life skills such as communication and survival.

In conclusion, while some say children have too much freedom in today’s world, associated with the lack of parents’ supervision, I am still of the belief that young generations are overcontrolled, including fear of an unsuccessful future from parents, will be more convincing.
