Band 8+: Pollution and other environmental damage are caused by a country developing and becoming richer. This problem cannot be avoided. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is said that a country’s development contributes to unavoidable environmental degradation. However, while I still admit that pollution and other environmental damages result from a country’s development and profit-gaining, there are still some feasible ways to tackle these problems.

Some people favor developing a country, viewing environmental degradation as unavoidable due to industrialization and urbanization. Regarding the former, developing a country requires a long process of industrialization and the construction of many industrial factories. Therefore, along with this growing number, huge amounts of materials used for production, such as oil and coal, may come to the fore, leading to further exploitation to meet demand. Countries like China and India, which have experienced rapid industrial growth, have seen significant environmental consequences, such as air pollution and water contamination. This is because economic growth is often prioritized over environmental protection in the early stages of development. Another reason is urbanization with expanded cities lead to deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

However, I still firmly believe that these problems, caused by the process of developing a country, can be avoided by the implementation of sustainable practices. Specifically, the money gained through industries can be allocated to environmental protection. For instance, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power can replace fossil fuels, significantly reducing emissions and saving energy .Besides, adopting sustainable practices not only mitigates environmental harm but also ensures long-term economic benefits. Green industries, such as clean energy and eco-tourism, create jobs while preserving natural resources. Countries that protect their environment are also more likely to attract investors and tourists. For example, Costa Rica has focused on environmental conservation and renewable energy, earning a reputation as a sustainable development model while boosting its economy.

In brief, although a country’s development can result in some environmental problems, a thorough consideration of sustainable practices can tackle them successfully. Moreover, such applications can also provide various economic rationales while still protecting the environment.
