It is believed by some individuals that more emphasis should be given to academic subjects, while others believe that practical skills should be emphasized. I believe with the latter viewpoint and I will discuss both the views in this essay.
Firstly, the proponents contend that theoretical subjects such as science, maths and history are of the utmost importance for students because they form a strong knowledge base for their future. This is to say, people would be able to do basic calculations in real life if they learn mathematics, similarly science helps with the basic knowledge of things of everyday life. For instance, in the United States most of the students find it easy to perform everyday tasks after graduating from school, according to a recent survey. Thus, these reasons highlight the importance of academic subjects.
However, the supporters of the idea that practical skills are essential for students in the real life world. Communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are some of the areas which play a pivotal role in the life of every individual in the contemporary world. Not only does these skills aid relationships, but also increases empathy in people. For example, students having strong interpersonal skills are able to form better relationships with their peers which have a positive impact in their life. Therefore, due to these reasons I firmly believe that teaching practical skills should be emphasized more than academic skills.
In conclusion, due to basic everyday knowledge, it is thought by some that students should be taught academic subjects. However, in my opinion, practical skills are pragmatic owing to the strong relationships that could be built with it which are vital for humans.
