It is often argued that environmental protection is beyond the reach of individuals and must be handled by governments and large corporations. I partly agree with this statement because while authorities play a crucial role, individuals can also contribute meaningfully.
It is believed that environment can be improved strongly by executive because at the initiative of the government laws, regulations and policies will be introduced. For instance, sovereigns can ban single – use plastics or enforce strict emissions standards. Furthermore, the governing body should require each institution and household to have individual waste bins. In addition, trash bins should not be placed on the streets; instead, people should be responsible for taking their waste home — similar to the waste management policy in Japan. These actions lead to measurable improvements in air and water quality.
However, the role of individuals should not be underestimated. Daily actions of people also play a crucial role to improving environment such as do not litter, recycling, take their trash with them and clean up after themselves. In addition, a study of the WWF ( 2021 ) shows that community recycling initiatives reduced plastic waste by 30% in some urban areas. Finally, millions of individuals take similar actions, the effect will be significant.
In conclusion, although large organizations and governments have the power to make significant changes, the role of individuals should not be underestimated. Both must work together to ensure a sustainable future.
