The bar chart illustrates the estimated world illiteracy rates by gender(female,male) and area (South Asia, Arab States, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, Latin America and developed countries) for the year 2000.
Overall, it can be seen that the highest rates were in South Asia at around 55 percent in female and at nearly 35 percent, whereas the lowest rates were in developed countries for almost about 3 percent in women, and roughly 1 percent in men.
In terms of estimated world illiteracy rates by female, it were in all given areas the highest proportion than by male. Rate by female in Arab States at approximately 52 percent was slightly higher than in Sub-Saharan, which was 47 percent.
On the other hand, the estimated world illiteracy by male in Latin America was much higher (exact a 10 percent) compared to male in East Asia, which was only at about 8 percent.
