Band 6+: Some people think that people commit crime because of poverty and social problems, while others think it is because of their bad nature. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

A group of people thinks that crime mostly relates to external factors such as destitution or exposure to bad environments, while others state it is the inherent personality. In my opinion, the former reason account for a bigger trigger of breaking the law

On the one hand, it is undeniable that plenty of criminal cases happen due to the culprit’s mental disorder. To begin with, there is a group of kids who were born with innate moral feelings, to which without a supervisor they are easy to break the laws. For example, plenty of adolescent crimes were detected, they offend humanity out of curiosity and pleasure. Besides, unstable mental health is a familiar cause for crime, thus some people merely see crime as their achievement. It is not rare to see various white-collar cases such as embezzlement and fraud, which is not because of money. However, provided that personal bad nature is a considerable reason, external factors still play a vital role in triggering humans to do something wrong.

On the other hand, the surrounding environment including parent nurtures, money and living area should be taken into consideration for the core reasons. Firstly, people growing up without positive role models and close guidance from their parents are easily prone to wrongdoings. For example, children raised in a wealthy family background with full financial support and poor supervision from their busy parents, they would easily commit crime as a new interest. Secondly, most of the lawbreakers were compelled to survive even though they understood their misconduct. For example, frequent occurrences such as thieves, shoplifting, robbers all have the same objective as their source of livelihood. Moreover, people living in complicated areas such as urban slums have an early exposure to violence, gradually they normalize these social problems. Growing up in such an environment would form in their mind that they are allowed to do the same as others, then they commit the crimes without worrying about consequences.

In conclusion, even though personal bad characteristics are a core threat for crimes, poor living environment and things around such as money and people are still the main factors for this situation. From this points, measures could be taken from social and government to assist disadvantaged people and improve this issue.
