Band 8+: Question: Some people believe that children should be taught to be competitive in school. Others believe that cooperation and teamwork are more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, there has been a debate over whether schools should focus on encouraging competition or cooperation among students. While some people believe that competitiveness prepares students for the real world, others argue that teamwork is more valuable in modern society. This essay will examine both sides before offering my own opinion.

On one hand, teaching students to be competitive can motivate them to perform better. When students strive to be the best, they often study harder, develop discipline, and aim for higher goals. This can result in higher academic achievement and a strong work ethic. For example, students who are driven to outperform others may end up being more successful in university applications or job markets. Furthermore, competition can help students learn how to deal with failure and pressure, which are common in adult life.

On the other hand, cooperation is an essential skill in today’s world. Many jobs require people to work effectively in teams, communicate clearly, and support each other. Schools that promote collaboration help students to develop empathy and social skills. In group projects, for instance, students must listen to others’ ideas and compromise, which are useful skills both professionally and personally. Also, a focus on cooperation may reduce stress and unhealthy rivalries among students.

In my opinion, both qualities are important, but cooperation should be given slightly more attention in schools. While competition can drive individual success, cooperation builds a more supportive learning environment and better prepares students for teamwork in real life.

In conclusion, while competition can help students push themselves, cooperation builds essential interpersonal skills. A balanced approach is best, but emphasis on teamwork is more suitable for long-term development.
