Band 9: The best way to reduce crime: longer prison sentences vs. alternative methods (like rehabilitation and prevention).

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people argue that imposing longer prison sentences is the most effective method to decrease criminal activity, while others contend that alternative approaches, such as rehabilitation and education, yield better results. This essay will examine both perspectives before stating my firm belief that tackling the root causes of crime through preventive measures is far more effective than simply extending incarceration periods.

On the one hand, supporters of longer prison sentences believe that severe punishment acts as a strong deterrent. From this viewpoint, if offenders know they will spend many years behind bars, they may reconsider committing crimes in the first place. Furthermore, keeping dangerous criminals locked away for longer periods can ensure public safety, as it prevents repeat offences. For example, serial offenders and violent criminals pose an ongoing threat to society if released too soon. Therefore, lengthy imprisonment can, to some extent, reduce crime rates in the short term.

On the other hand, many argue that this approach fails to address the underlying factors that lead to criminal behaviour, such as poverty, lack of education, and substance abuse. In this regard, alternative strategies like vocational training, psychological counselling, and community service can reintegrate offenders into society and significantly reduce reoffending. For instance, Scandinavian countries focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment, and they consistently report some of the lowest crime rates in the world. Such evidence suggests that helping individuals break the cycle of crime is more sustainable than punitive measures alone.

In my opinion, while longer prison sentences may be necessary for particularly dangerous individuals, they do little to prevent crime in the long run. Governments should prioritise investment in education, social welfare, and employment opportunities to tackle crime at its roots. By providing people with viable alternatives and support, societies can create an environment where crime is less likely to occur in the first place.

In conclusion, although extended prison terms can act as a deterrent and protect the public temporarily, they are not a comprehensive solution to crime. A more effective approach is to address the socioeconomic causes and promote rehabilitation, thereby fostering a safer and more just society in the long term.

Taking a gap year after graduation is becoming common among high school students in many countries. I believe that while a one year break enables young people to expand their mindset and to be financially independent, addiction to money from an early age and social isolation can be the drawbacks. The majority of graduated students […]

Governments around the world spend too much money on treating illnesses and diseases and not enough on health education and prevention. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

I very much agree with the statement that governments are not spending their health budgets in the best possible way. If governments continue to spend such large sums of money on treating illness and disease instead of preventing these diseases, then perhaps they should rename our national health services ‘national illness services’! Governments will probably […]

Many people now prefer to rent things instead of owning them. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, renting goods and services has become increasingly common, and many people prefer this option to purchasing things outright. I largely agree with this trend because renting can reduce financial pressure and provide greater flexibility, particularly when expensive items are only needed for a limited period. One major reason why people choose to […]
