This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 9 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 1 Test 4 question:
“How popular are bicycles in your home town? [Why?]”
Sample 1: Popular
In my hometown, the popularity of bicycles has surged recently due to health movements. An amplified awareness of health benefits, particularly cardio, related to cycling has pushed many to adopt it as a regular exercise form. It’s inspiring to see so many folks commit to such a healthy lifestyle.
Sample 2: Popular
Bicycling is incredibly trendy in my hometown due to growing environmental consciousness. Many residents have started turning to bicycles as a way to reduce their carbon footprint. Plus, it’s a bonus to avoid the ever-increasing traffic congestion.
Sample 3: Not Popular
In the hustle and bustle of my hometown, bicycles are, admittedly, not very common. People are always in a hurry to get somewhere and riding a bike doesn’t meet the need for speed. Although a few enjoy a bike ride from time to time, most prefer quicker modes of transport like cars or the metro.
Sample 4: Not Popular
Pedaling about is not exactly in vogue in my hometown. The town’s layout spans broad acres, making bikes impractical for commuting. Moreover, the harsh weather often makes it challenging to cycle. Therefore, people don’t find it feasible to invest in bicycles when other options like cars and public transportation offer comfort and efficiency.
Sample 5: Moderate
Bicycles in my hometown have seen an interesting trajectory. They used to be quite popular when I was young, perhaps due to the simplicity of the place. Nevertheless, as the town has grown and modernized, cars have largely replaced them. Still, there’s been an emerging resurgence, especially among those conscious of their carbon footprint, leading to a resurgence of bikes, albeit moderate.
Sample 6: Moderate
Bicycles own a comfortable sphere of popularity in my hometown. They’re not necessarily the transport of choice for the masses, but they are far from being ignored. That’s because the town has struck a balance, with routes accommodating both motorized and non-motorized conveyance. But then, the largely mountainous landscapes deter a few would-be cyclists from completely embracing this eco-friendly mode of transport.
Sample 7: Not Sure
To be candid, I don’t have a clear picture of bike usage in my hometown. My limited exposure, as a result of living abroad for several years, constrains me from providing an informed judgment. I imagine my perception would shift should I spend more time there and actively observe.
Sample 8: Not Sure
I feel at a loss to accurately evaluate the popularity of bicycling in my town, I’m afraid. Much of my recollections go back to my childhood when bicycles weren’t so prominent. My memories, though quite lucid, might not reflect the current scenario.
Sample 9: It Depends
In my hometown, bicycles are quite popular, though not uniformly so. This popularity is significantly affected by the weather conditions. Many residents resort to biking on dry, sunny days when cycling can be blissful. However, on days with inclement weather, like heavy rain or scorching heat, you’d hardly see anyone on bicycles since these harsh conditions decrease comfort and safety on the bike.
Sample 10: It Depends
In my hometown, the prevalence of bicycles varies distinctly depending on the region. In the flat, suburban areas where distances among houses are significant, bicycling is a common sight. It not only provides exercise but also a practical means of commute. However, in the heavily urbanized and hilly regions, cars and public transportation are more dominant due to the difficulty of cycling uphill.
