In today’s increasingly complex world, the importance of education has attracted significant public interest. In certain universities, many people believe that specialized subjects should be focused on by students; while others argue that students should be encouraged to study a spacious range of subjects. From my perspective, I believe that while studying a wide spectrum of subjects is essential, incorporating specific subjects chosen by students into the curriculum can provide students opportunities to enhance their strengths.
On the one hand, studying a wide spectrum of subjects offers learners comprehensive knowledge and does not restrict them to numerous jobs. If students learn all subjects, they can widen their work scope. Moreover, numerous jobs that they can choose to work, instead of being limited because of not studying certain subjects that that work needs. For instance, in Vietnam, the education system is developed and divided subjects into a number of groups, with Mathematics, English and Literature subjects being compulsory, that students can opt to learn. Many learners choose only Chemistry and Physics, without Biology; as a result, they can not pursue many medical-related professions.
On the other hand, focusing on specialized subjects allows students to develop in-depth knowledge and expertise in their chosen fields. This deep understanding is crucial for professions that require a high level of technical skill or knowledge, such as engineering, medicine, or law. By concentrating on their major subjects, students can hone their skills, making them more competitive in the job market. For instance, most Vietnamese students are oriented to develop in their passion, such as the arts field, their parents foster them when they are children, after which they can become artists, which is their dream.
In conclusion, while studying a broader range of subjects provides a number of merits, such as achieving a well-rounded education and does not limit to a wide range of jobs; I totally believe that universities should encourage students to focus on specific subjects. This approach not only helps students to develop expertise quickly but also identify their future careers.
