This report describes the change in the total population in New York city in the period from 1800 to 2000, along with more detailed data about the five districts in New York City, which are: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
In 1800 the total population of New York city slightly passed 79000. The majority of this number was in Manhattan, with around 60500 person, while the rest of the districts was roughly 19000. However, the number of population rocketed to around 3.5 million in 1900, along with a change in the distribution among districts. Manhattan faced a decrease by around a quarter from 1800. While other districts population percentage rose from 24% in 1800 to 46% in 1900.
Moreover, the population in New York City continued to grow, by more than the double from 1900, it reached to around 8 million in 2000. Nonetheless, the Manhattan still faced a decline in the population. On the other hand, other district population grew dramatically to reach 81% percent of the total population number. These numbers shows that the population was transferred to New York city over the years, preffering other districts rather than Manhattan.
