In recent years, many people have developed a tendency to undergo plastic surgeries to look better. This trend is attributable to the influence of social media and instant competition among individuals. In my opinion, this phenomenon is a negative one and can damage both physical and mental well-being.
A primary reason behind the popularity of cosmetic operations is the rise of social media. In fact, social media sites like tik-tok or instagram are developing day by day. Thus more and more people are exposed to bloggers, media influencers and other celebrities, urging them to gain a perfect appearance and look more beautiful. As a result, changing their body or even important organs like nose and ears seems the best way for them to fulfill their aims. Another underlying reason contributing to this phenomenon is the competitive nature of our society. People these days compare their financial resources, reputation and their look with others, creating vicious competition. To achieve a ”perfect” personality, in most cases, they put themselves through completing plastic surgery procedures. Those who do so claim that being attractive helps them to install confidence and self-esteem.
However, while having plastic operations offers some benefits, I believe that it has more negative consequences to the physical health of people. Studies showed that those who undergo such operations are more likely to experience early ageing skin. This is because, to complete cosmetic surgery procedures, doctors have to insert artificial hormones into the patient’s body and replace natural tissues. Furthermore, being more attractive than others also brings about mental problems like stress and a sense of isolation all of which contribute to the weakened mental well-being. In order to avoid such feelings, people need to learn to be grateful for their natural appearance.
In conclusion, the prevalence of plastic surgeries results from being exposed to social media and vicious competition. In turn, this phenomenon leads to several negative outcomes such as damaged physical and mental health.
