In the modern era, consumer demand in exotic produce has led to a heavy reliance on imported food. Although, long food transport distance causes carbon footprint, i believe that the economic and nutritional benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
One disadvantage of importing food from abroad is environmental degradation. Food miles increase the amount of gases produced by transporting goods for long distances. For example, Transportation of foods by ships, trains, and planes creates carbon footprint which can lead to climate change. Cheap imported goods can contribute to the loss of job opportunities for local farmers. Since farmers can not deal with international markets, they might stop gathering, threatening domestic agriculture. Therefore, demand for international foods can bring to environmental impact and less job requires.
However, the number of advantages of imported goods are greater. One of the major benefits of importing food is year-round availability. With exported goods, consumers can enjoy fresh exotic fruits such as mangoes, bananas and avocadoes at any time, regardless the season. Additionally, this helps to reduce foot shortage in countries with harsh climates or drought. Furthermore, exporting unique ingredients helps broaden culinary horizons. When supermarkets sell foreign species, souses or frozen finished goods, people can try new meals and can learn about different cultures. In this case, it helps immigrants to cook their traditional dishes and keep their culture alive.
To sum up, despite some drawbacks, including environmental concerns and challenges for local farmers, they are outweighed by benefits, such as wider variety of exotic food, year-round access to fresh goods, and opportunities to try new international food.
